MFM Daily Devotional Message Thursday 28th May 2026.

David was the last son of Jesse, the Bethlehemite. His mother’s name is not mentioned in the Bible but we know he had a mother. David was faithful to both his parents. In 1 Samuel 17, we see David portrayed as an obedient child. He ran his father’s errand without complaining. If he had refused to go on that errand, he would have missed the chance to kill Goliath and rise to fame. Also, while he was still running from Saul for his life, he made provision for his parents. He took them to the king of Moab since they were most likely too old to run with him.

David knew there was no way his parents could be safe in Israel while he himself was wanted so he took them to safety. This was a sign of a responsible child. Beloved, God wants us to also be responsible towards our parents – biological and non biological. Parents are not the only ones who help children. It gets to a point where children also help parents. As much as we do not encourage parents to be a burden on their children, we also do not advise children to abandon parents in their old age.

There are verses of scripture that talk about honouring one’s parents. One of the ten commandments is to honour your father and mother, it carries with it the promise of long life and wellness in your possession (Exodus 20:12, Deuteronorny 5:16, Ephesians 6:2). Jesus also emphasised the importance of honouring parents and condemned the tradition that allowed children to dishonour their parents (Matthew 15:3-6).

This command still holds today. God wants us to take care of our parents till old age and death. Don’t abandon your responsibilities towards your parents for whatever reason; they have a measure of authority over you and it is important that they bless you rather than curse you. No matter your position in the family, first child, middle child or last child, take care of your parents and God will bless you for it, in Jesus’ name.
