ANGLICAN COMMUNION DEVOTIONAL OUTLINE FOR 21ST JUNE 2026.
In our text today, the Lord Jesus Christ exhorts His disciples not to worry about their basic needs such as food and clothing. He argues that if God provides for the birds of the air and clothes the grass of the field, He will certainly meet the needs of His children who live according to His purpose. Jesus’ question, “Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?” (v. 25), highlights that there is more to life than pursuing ordinary necessities.
This does not imply that Christians should be idle or lazy (1 Tim. 5:8; 2 Thess. 3:10; Rom. 12:11). Rather, it emphasises that instead of being consumed by worldly concerns, Christians should prioritise seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness, by living according to God’s Word. Beloved, as Christians, we are called to a higher purpose than merely pursuing food and shelter. Our primary concern should be how to honour God in our daily lives, not what we will eat or wear.
God is aware of our basic needs and desires to sustain us. His purpose, however, is not for us to fight for these needs at the expense of our Christian integrity. Instead, He has designed us to seek first the things that pertain to His kingdom, living by every word that proceeds from His mouth. Worry can lead to distress, hopelessness, and a loss of faith in God’s ability to provide. When we prioritise God’s kingdom, we can trust that He will provide our needs.
PRAYER POINT: Dear Lord, help me to seek first your kingdom as I trust in you to meet my daily needs.
