TODAY’S  SCRIPTURE: Philippians 2:3-4 (NCV)

RICK WARREN DAILY DEVOTIONAL FOR TODAY 31ST MAY 2025.

Nothing ruins a small group discussion faster than one person in the group acting like they know it all.

When you enter the discussion time in your small group, it’s not your time to show off. You’re not there to impress people. The only way you’re going to grow from your time together is if you come to the discussion with a desire to learn and an attitude of humility.

The Bible says in Romans 12:16, “Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary

people. And don’t think you know it all!” (NLT).

Very few of us are Bible scholars. We’re all just ordinary people trying to follow God more faithfully.

When you have an attitude of humility, it means you are teachable. The Bible says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6 GNT). God gives grace to the humble because humble people are teachable.

You can learn from anybody if you just know the right questions to ask. Everybody in your small group can teach you something. They may be older or younger or more educated or less educated. But it has nothing to do with that.

Everybody can teach you something because they’ve had life experiences you’ve never had. Every one of them has learned something about God from their unique experiences. It’s up to you to ask the questions and look for the lessons as they share their stories.

“Do not let selfishness or pride be your guide. Instead, be humble and give more honor to others than to yourselves. Do not be interested only in your own life, but be interested in the lives of others” (Philippians 2:3-4 NCV).

It’s easy to be preoccupied with your life, your goals, your responsibilities, your job, your to-do list, your ministry, and your reputation. It’s easy to only think about yourself.

But being committed to a small group means you’re interested in the lives of others. It helps you become less selfish and self-centered as you practice humility.

When you come to small group, leave your ego at the door. Listen more than you talk, ask thoughtful questions, and show people that you care about them. Then look for the many ways God will teach you and grow you as you humbly learn from others.
