RCCG YAYA Sunday School Teacher Manual Lesson No: 49

OPENING PRAYER: Father, help me to understand the importance of the Book of Life in Jesus’ name

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The Assistant Teacher should review the previous week’s lesson with particular attention to the lesson outline.

MEMORY VERSE: And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. – Revelation 20:12 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Revelation 20:11-15 (KJV)

11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

INTRODUCTION: The Scripture establishes two kinds of eternity: eternal life and eternal damnation (Revelation 20:6). It also establishes that there are ‘Books’ and there is the ‘Book’ which is the book of life (Revelation 20:12). This book of life is different from ‘the book of the living’ mentioned in Psalm 69:28 which is earthly; a physical life, and not eternal life. This book of Life, according to the Bible, is the same as the Lamb’s book of life (Revelation 21:27). God is the greatest recorder and rewarder. He knows those who are His and has their records. He also has the records of those who do not belong to Him (2 Timothy 2:19).

TEXT REVIEW: REVELATION 20:11-15

Two books are mentioned in the passage. The dead that will stand before God and be judged from the books are sinners who will partake in the second death or external punishment because their names are not written in the ‘Book of Life’ which is meant for the saints.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: THE ‘BOOKS’ VERSUS THE BOOK OF LIFE

A. The book of life is described in Revelation 3:5 as the book containing the set of names of those who will live with God forever.
i. At the great white throne judgement, sinners will be judged according to their deeds in ‘the books.’
ii. Anyone who goes for this judgement does not have his name in the book of life and such is doomed for eternal damnation (Revelation 20:11-15).

B. The ‘book of life’ contains the names of those who have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus (Revelation 5:9; 21:27).
i. Saints, who have laboured faithfully, have the assurance of being registered in the book of life (Philippians 4:3).
ii. There is a proportionate reward for the works of the Saints (1 Corinthians 3:13-15).

C. Our greatest joy should be that our names are in the book of life.
i. To have your name written in the book of life, you must be born again.
ii. Any ‘believer’ that sins or falls away from the faith – apostasy (Hebrews 6:4-6) and refuses to repent, will have his name blotted out of the book of life (Revelation 3:1-5).
iii. Heaven must be our priority in all we do (Luke 10:20).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Is it every time a believer sins that his/her name is blotted out of the book of life and rewritten when he/she repents? Discuss.

LESSON OUTLINE 2: WHO WILL NOT BE IN THE BOOK OF LIFE?

The Bible says that anyone who refuses to accept Christ as Lord and Saviour is already condemned (John 3:18; 5:24).

  1. People who indulge in the works of the flesh will not be found in the book of life (Galatians 5:20-21).
  2. The abominable, unbelieving, liars, sorcerers, idolaters, etc. will not have their names in the book of life (Revelation 21:8, 27).
  3. The apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 further states the categories of people whose names would not be in the book of life.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Will those who will not hear about Christ before death make heaven?

CONCLUSION: Being born again is indeed the prerequisite for eternal life, but we must work out our salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12).

EVALUATION: Mention four categories of people that will not be found in the book of life.

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, please do not let my name be blotted out of the book of Life in Jesus’ name.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention two sets of people who will have their names in the book of life (5×2=10 Marks).
