OPENING PRAYER: Father, help me to understand your nearness and active involvement in my affairs.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE:

(i) Teachers should welcome students to the first Sunday School lesson for the year 2026/2027.
(ii) Teachers and students should thank God for His unfailing mercies and faithfulness throughout the 2025/2026 Sunday School Year.
(iii) The teacher should encourage the students to be steadfast, regular, and punctual in Sunday School throughout the year.

MEMORY VERSE: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. – Colossians 1:17 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Psalm 139:1-5 (KJV)

1 O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.

2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.

3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.

4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.

5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.

INTRODUCTION: The immanence of God refers to His presence, nearness, and active involvement in His creation and in the lives of His people. It is the biblical truth that God is not distant, or merely observing from afar; He is close, attentive, connected and relational. This is different from His transcendence, which means that God is above, infinitely greater, more powerful, distant and separate from the material universe, existing beyond and utterly distinct from everything He created (Jeremiah 23:23; Isaiah 55:9).

LESSON AIM: To understand the concept of God’s immanence.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: Through this lesson, students should be able to:

a. Explain the concept of God’s immanence.
b. Give biblical instances of God’s immanence.
c. Highlight the implications of God’s immanence.

TEACHING PLAN: To achieve the above-stated objectives, the teacher should:

a. Allow the students to recite the memory verse, read the Bible passage, contribute to the discussion, and do class activities and assignments.
b. Allow the Assistant Teacher to see to the well-being of the class, and mark attendance and assignments.
c. Teach the lesson outline, summarise, conclude, evaluate the lesson and give assignments.

TEXT REVIEW: Psalm 139:1-5.

Here, the Psalmist proclaims that the knowledge of God about him (and by implication about all men) is all encompassing and there is nothing about him that is hidden from God. He said:

A. O Lord, Thou hast searched me and Known me. Vs. 1

B. Then he went ahead to list some of the things he believes that God knows about him:
i. Thou knowest my down-sitting…..Vs. 2a
ii. Thou understandeth my…..Vs. 2b
iii. Thou compassest and my…..Vs. 3a
iv. Art acquainted…..Vs. 3b
v. For there is…..Vs. 4
vi. Thou hast beset me…..Vs.5

LESSON OUTLINES

LESSON OUTLINE 1: BIBLICAL INSTANCES

A. God has always been present with and involved in the world He created, especially with His people.

i. At creation, God formed Adam “from the dust” and breathed life into him (Genesis 2:7).
ii. God’s voice was heard “walking in the garden” (Genesis 3:8).
iii. The burning bush reveals God’s persona’ call to Moses (Exodus 3:4) as well as His awareness, compassion, and active response to the affliction of His people (Exodus 3:7).
iv. God’s presence dwelt among Israel in the tabernacle (Exodus 25:8), and His glory (visibly) filled the temple (1 Kings 8:10-11).
v. David declares God’s inescapable nearness: whether in the heavens, depths, or darkness, God is there (Psalm 139:7).
vi. 1 Kings 19:12 reveals God’s personal and intimate way of speaking to His prophets.

B. Jesus, becoming God in the flesh (John 1:14), is the ultimate act of divine immanence.

i. “Immanuel” means “God with us”(Matthew 1:23).
ii. He came to the earth, walked, talked, healed, cried and ate with people.
iii. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would come to dwell in believers (John 14:17).
iv. The Spirit is not just near but indwelling, guiding, and teaching us (John 14:26).
v. Christ remains present with His people through the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:20).

C. In the New Heavens and New Earth, God will dwell fully and forever with His people (Revelation 21:3). This is the eternal expression of God’s immanence.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: The class should discuss whether God is truly present and involved in the world today, especially with the negative occurrences. They can share their life experiences.

LESSON OUTLINE 2: THE IMPLICATIONS

1. God is accessible – We can pray and hear from Him (1 John 5:14-15).
2. God is personal – God knows our thoughts, fears, and desires (Psalm 139:1-3).
3. God is compassionate – He sees suffering and acts accordingly (Exodus 3:7-8).
4. God disciplines and guides – As a Father does (Hebrews 12:6-7).
5. God is worthy of worship – Not just as Creator but as a loving Father (Revelation 15:4).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Which of these implications of God’s character do people find hard to believe or experience?

CONCLUSION: God is not far from believers in Christ: “for in Him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:27-28).

EVALUATION: Mention four implications of God’s immanence.

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, let me enjoy more of your presence, nearness and active involvement in my life in Jesus’ name.

ASSIGNMENT: In what area(s) do you want God to show His immanence? Speak to Him now and have faith that He will show up for you (No mark).
