Topic: Strategic Leadership
OPENING PRAYER: Father, help me to be a strategic leader
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The Assistant Teacher should review the previous week’s lesson with particular attention to the lesson outline.
MEMORY VERSE: Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens: – Exodus 18:21 (KJV)
BIBLE PASSAGE: Nehemiah 2:17-18 (KJV)
17 Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.
18 Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king’s words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.
INTRODUCTION: To be strategic is to fix a long-term objective and interest, and the means to achieve such. Simply put, a leader is someone who influences others to achieve set goals. A strategic leader is, therefore, someone with a long-term goal, direction, etc., who influences people to achieve it (Nehemiah 2:5). Strategic leadership is all-inclusive as it creates the group’s overall vision and the means to achieve it. Based on this vision, strategic leaders motivate others to foster unity and a way to bring about change in the group as it remains relevant. LESSON AIM: To teach students how to become strategic leaders
TEACHING OBJECTIVES: Through this study, students should be able to:
a. State the meanings of strategic, leader and strategic leadership.
b. State the traits of strategic leaders.
c. Mention ways to become a strategic leader.
TEXT REVIEW: Nehemiah 2:17-18.
A. In this passage, Nehemiah was able to:
a. Identify the problem: Jerusalem had become a reproach, and the people were in distress. V17a.
b. He communicated the solution: that they all join hands to rebuild its walls. V17b.
c. He succeeded in raising their morale and giving them hope by telling them about God’s backing and the support of the king for the cause. V18a.
d. The people then responded with action to achieve the goal and his vision. V18b.
B. These are traits of a strategic leader that he exhibited.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: TRAITS OF STRATEGIC LEADERS
Strategic leaders have exceptional qualities which make them stand out. Some of them a stated below.
i. Allegiance to the group’s vision: Strategic leaders are completely devoted to the group’s vision; they see the big picture and map out strategies to see to its fulfilment (Proverbs 29:18a; Habakkuk 2:2). They also understand the group’s mission, core values, etc. and plan with the future in mind.
ii. Problem-solving skills: They develop a great mastery to attend to difficult issues that arise (Genesis 41:33-36; 1 Samuel 30:20-23).
iii. Effective communication: They synergise with their subordinates and allow for a free flow of communication. They seek to understand and to be understood (Proverbs 25:11; Colossians 4:6).
iv. Cautious use of power: As leaders, they do not oppress their subordinates. They lead with the fear of God (Ephesians 6:9).
v. Transparency: People can easily see through them as they carry out their day-to-day activities without any form of dishonesty (Psalm 26:11a; Proverbs 11:3).
vi. Empathy: They lead with compassion recognising that though they are leaders, they are also humans with their strengths and weaknesses (Ephesians 4:32).
vii. Enthusiasm: They are dedicated and always eager to work to ensure that the group is successful and operates at its maximum capacity (2 Chronicles 2:13-14; 2 Corinthians 8:22).
viii. Delegation: They give assignments and transfer power to their subordinates. They have no fear in allowing people to stand in for the when the need arises. They deliberately raise their followers to be future leaders (2 Timothy 2:2).

LESSON OUTLINE 2: WAYS TO BE ONE
Many ways are open to being a strategic leader but we shall look at some of them:
i. Recognise and seize opportunities all the time (Numbers 13:30).
ii. Increase your value to the group by contributing effectively to its growth (Daniel 6:28; Proverbs 22:29).
iii. Widen your scope by thinking of the progress of the whole organisation instead of limiting the level to yourself and your unit success (Nehemiah 2:3-5).
iv. Knowledge is key to strategic leadership, so, keep yourself abreast with developments within and outside your environment; get to know about government regulations, competition, technological advancements, etc. (Proverbs 18:15).
v. Change is constant, so be sensitive to new developments and how to skilfully take the group through it.
vi. Always be creative and confident to bring new initiatives to the company (2 Chronicles 26:10, 14-15).
vii. Exemplify good values so you can lead your followers in the right way (1 Corinthians 11:1).
viii. It takes humility to lead strategically (Proverbs 22:4).
