House Fellowship Leader’s Manual Lesson No: 46

OPENING PRAYER: Father, pull all our young ones out of unhealthy relationships that can jeopardise their lives.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The leaders should remind the members on “Abandoned?” as the topic for last week.

MEMORY VERSE: Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed. – 2 Samuel 13:5 (KJV)

BIBLE TEXT: 2 Samuel 13:1-14 (KJV)

1 And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.

2 And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do anything to her.

3 But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother: and Jonadab was a very subtil man.

4 And he said unto him, Why art thou, being the king’s son, lean from day to day? wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.

5 And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and make thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand.

6 So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand.

7 Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon’s house, and dress him meat.

8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house; and he was laid down. And she took flour, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and did bake the cakes.

9 And she took a pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him.

10 And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat into the chamber, that I may eat of thine hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother.

11 And when she had brought them unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come lie with me, my sister.

12 And she answered him, Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou this folly.

13 And I, whither shall I cause my shame to go? and as for thee, thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not withhold me from thee.

14 Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice: but, being stronger than she, forced her, and lay with her.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Unhealthy relationships have maimed the dreams of many innocent souls, even in our daily papers, we read of young ladies who have died an untimely death to ritual killings and anger from their so-called “boyfriend”. The Bible says, in 1 Corinthians 15:33, that you should not be fooled by those who say such sweet things to your hearing. If you listen to them and cohabit with them, you are on the verge of destruction; therefore, make a quick check on who you are dealing with as friends or colleagues

LESSON AIM: To make members understand the toxic effects unhealthy relationships bring.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, members should know:

  • That an unhealthy relationship is toxic and deadly.
  • Signs and how to address it

TEXT REVIEW: 2 Samuel 13:1-14

  • Lust brings torment and is deadly.
  • When you are endangered by lust, you need a good counsellor.
  • Your friend may determine how you will end.
  • Parents should be careful on giving a nod to their children’s demands; you ought to query their requests.

LESSON OUTLINE ONE: TOXIC AND DEADLY

One of the characteristics of an unhealthy relationship is that it is toxic and deadly. What does toxic and deadly means?

a. It is harmful to your life and destiny. Amnon died an untimely death due to having a toxic friendship.
b. It can bring injury to you and your associates. The death of Amnon due to a toxic relationship with Jonadab brought pain to king David.
c. It can bring hatred and unforgiveness to the recipient.
d. Toxic relationship can bring irrevocable curses and spells to the family.
e. Toxic relationships can bring damages to organs in the body, loss of womb, eyes, etc.
f. It can cause untimely death.

LESSON OUTLINE TWO: SIGNS AND HOW TO ADDRESS IT.

Let us look at signs of an unhealthy relationship first.

  • Jealous accusations
  • Abusive behaviours.
  • Excessive control on all sensitive matters.
  • Disrespect and constant physical violence.
  • Inability to manage anger on trivial issues.
  • Accusing others rather than taking responsibility.
  • Belittling and continuous intimidation

When you see all these signs, there is a need to keep yourself out of the relationship to avoid unforeseen occurrences, get a break, get spiritual counsel, and never manage a toxic relationship; it is poisonous.

SUMMARY: Your friend may determine how you will end.

CONCLUSION: In the beginning, an unhealthy relationship might not seem like a big deal, but when it is unchecked and unaddressed, it becomes a big monster.

WEEKLY ACTIVITY: What are the repercussions for unhealthy relationships?

PRAYER POINTS.

  1. Father, free all your children from all evil antics against divine order.
  2. Father, let every act of disrespect and constant physical violence stop in our nation
  3. Father, please stop every inability to manage anger on trivial issues amongst our youths.
  4. Every act of irresponsibility be destroyed amongst believers.
  5. Father, let every act of continuous intimidation in our institution be destabilised.
