Lesson No: 37

OPENING PRAYER: Father, please give me enough grace and carefulness to keep off any step to costly mistakes.

MEMORY VERSE: And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? – Genesis 25:32 (KJV)

BIBLE TEXT: Genesis 25:29-34 (KJV)

29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:

30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.

31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.

32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.

34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: Many believers have lost their birthright to worldly pleasures, leaving them under the servitude of the devil. At creation, every child of God has been endowed with spiritual gifts, inspirational abilities, access to divine treasures and provisions for endless celebration, but due to negligence and a life of indifference like Esau, many have become slaves to destiny. May we never make a costly mistake that will destroy our destiny in Jesus name.

LESSON AIM: To reveal to members the negative impact of making costly mistakes.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, members should know:

  • Dangers of making costly errors
  • The enticement that creates room for costly mistakes.

TEXT REVIEW: Genesis 25:29-34

a. Being exhausted should not create room for making errors.
b. Esau was ruled by his stomach’s yielding and his name (Edom).
c. Enemy will always hunt for your strength and glory.
d. Be careful, careful of your word when depressed or tired.

LESSON OUTLINE ONE: WHAT IS COSTLY MISTAKES?

A costly mistake is an action or error that results in significant consequences, damaging of reputation that can lead to adverse outcomes that may be difficult to rectify.

EXAMPLES OF COSTLY MISTAKES IN THE BIBLE

  1. Failure to obey God’s specific instruction by Adam and Eve. Genesis 2:15-16,3:1-7
  2. Esau despised his birthright because of food. Genesis 25:29-34.
  3. Moses lost access to the promised land because of his inability to control his anger. Numbers 20:7-12.
  4. Reuben sleeping with his father’s wife led to him being cursed. Genesis 49.
  5. Amnon’s inability to restrict his ungodly feelings for his stepsister led to his untimely death.
  6. Pride led to the withdrawal of Vashti’s royal right.
  7. Desire for worldly pleasure terminated the glorious ministry of Gehazi, Judas Iscariot and Demas.

LESSON OUTLINE TWO: ENTICEMENT THAT CREATE ROOM FOR COSTLY MISTAKES.

Proverbs 1:10 says, “ My son if sinners entice you, turn your back on them, To entice means to lure, to tempt, to attract, especially with the promise of reward or pleasure. In this present age, many have lost their path to greatness because of worldly enticements such as;

  • Desire for wealth, power.
  • Sensual pleasures like Amnon, son of king David.
  • Excessive pride
  • Pursuit of worldly status, like Absalom, he died a shameful death for plotting against his father. King David.
  • Evil company. 1 Corinthians 15:33.

SUMMARY: To avoid costly mistakes, set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Colossians 3:2

CONCLUSION: Earthly desires can lead to greed, anger, foolishness, arrogance; that is the reason a child of God should practice mindfulness by bringing one’s attention to the present moment, cultivate a sense of contentment and reduce the desire for worldly allures.
