MFM Daily Devotional Message Wednesday 18th November 2026.
Saul seemed initially unsure when he was called to be king. However, his confidence grew with time and he learnt how to handle the kingdom on the job. He started out with zeal for the Lord God and His people, Israel. The first verse of today’s Fire Scripture reveals that Saul built an altar to the Lord, his first altar. This was after a great victory over the invading Philistine army. Saul
acknowledged the Lord God of Israel who had given Israel this victory, knowing that they could not have won in their own strength.
They were totally outnumbered and they stood no chance, physically, but the awesome God showed up for them and Saul built an altar in acknowledgement. Saul asked counsel of God at the suggestion of the priest. When he didn’t receive an answer, he knew there was a sin in the camp. He had earlier instructed the army not to eat anything but Jonathan, his son, had eaten honey because he was ignorant of his father’s instruction.
Saul asked the Lord to cast a perfect lot and Jonathan was taken. Saul was willing to let his son die because he had sinned. Thankfully, the Israelites intervened and rescued Jonathan. Saul was that zealous for the Lord. In addition to his zeal for the Lord, Saul actually loved Israel. The last two verses of our Fire Scripture reveal how he fought against the enemies of Israel. He vexed them on every side and delivered Israel from those that hated them. His love for God led him to defend His heritage. Beloved, you need to cultivate love for the Lord and for His people. You cannot claim to love the Lord and not love His people. A true mark of a disciple of Christ is love – love for God and love for other people (John 13:35).
