DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
Have you ever thought of why the kite does not prey on ducklings but does not spare chicks? It is believed that when the kite picked a chick, the mother hen flared up, flew up, cackled very loudly and put up a vain resistance. When a similar fate befell the duckling, mother duck kept her cool and walked away. The kite was most uncomfortable with that posture – it would not predict what would follow! As for the hen, it had revealed the limit of its strength, and there lay its weakness – mere noise!
Similarly, the weakness of some professing Christians is in their strength – mere noise! Some “Christians” in our text were such – “unruly and vain talkers and deceivers.” They were so loud-mouthed that an effort had to be made to stop them and bring them to a sound faith. Otherwise, by all means, they would subvert Christian families. Their practice was poles apart from their profession. They were full of religious profession but destitute of good works, and were motivated by selfish interests.
Today, mere professors of religion abound. They are often known by their loudness and fluency in argument and in defence of their faulty positions. They profess knowledge of God, yet, like the tree cursed by Christ, they are full of leaves but have no fruit. In character and conduct, they lack the vital fruits of grace and genuine Christian conviction. Disobedience, self-will, insubordination, selfish ambitions and lusts have connived to defile their conscience. Yet they relent not in their effort to deceive and defile other believers.
An empty profession serves no good purpose. Rather, it ends in eternal disappointment and damnation. As professing Christians, we must ensure that our profession has substance and is rooted in the saving faith in Christ Jesus and true piety.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
A meagre possession is more valuable than a warehouse of mere profession.
THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:
Psalms 51-60
