DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY

Prophet Isaiah once exclaimed, in an attempt to evoke an undying reality: “Let favour be shewed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the majesty of the LORD” (Isaiah 26:10). The message is strikingly clear: except there is an inner gracious transformation, sinners and backsliders walk contrary to God and that by choice.

The reconstruction of the resettlers under Nehemiah had experienced tremendous progress, accompanied by hearty cooperation and synergy in the building project. Sadly, a wave of painful shock suddenly whirled around the team, but this time from within their own ranks. It was an internecine socio-economic crisis that borders on oppression, insensitivity, and flagrant disregard for the word of God on social relations among the Jews. The poor had a strong case against their rich brethren. Landowners saw their lands mortgaged to the rich in exchange for food for their families. Wealthy Jews exploited their brothers and sisters by loaning them money and taking their lands and their children as collateral. Jewish boys and girls had to choose between starvation and servitude! Usury was the order of the day. The oppressed wives and families cried out.

It is clear that God has a special concern for the poor and will not hold anyone guiltless for taking advantage of them. Generosity, hospitality and conscientious care must characterise our brotherhood. Even in business, our conduct and dealings must reflect the Bible’s teaching of honesty and equity. Employers should pay full and fair wages just as they painstakingly refrain from oppression.

Our personal Christian principles must include the avoidance of taking advantage of vulnerable, economically disadvantaged brethren in the church. Usury amongst the brethren must be avoided like a plague. Hospitality, fairness and love without dissimulation must be our watchword. We will do well always to remember that they that do wickedly deal unjustly both with God and man, and with their own souls.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: No one can successfully combine being a Christian and an oppressor.
