ANGLICAN COMMUNION DEVOTIONAL OUTLINE FOR 24TH AUGUST 2026.
Today is St. Bartholomew’s Day. He was one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus (Mark 3:18). Nothing much was written about him in the New Testament aside his listing as one of the Apostles. Most scholars today identify him as Nathanael, who appears in the Gospel according to St. John.
Tradition holds that he was the first bishop of Jerusalem and served at the Council of Jerusalem. He was said to have been martyred by beheading and must have been among those described in Acts 1:21-22 when Judas Iscariot was being replaced: “Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.
In our text, the Apostles were quarrelling over who was the greatest. Jesus told them point blank that it should not be so among them. Though Bartholomew was not too visible in his activities in the Scriptures, he was involved in all the activities carried out by the Apostles with Jesus. You may not be noticed in what you are doing now but be assured that heaven recognises what you do. Don’t give up.
PRAYER POINT: Dear Lord, help me to be encouraged to continue in your work whether recognised or not.
