Scripture: Proverbs 29:2
When the godly are in authority, the people rejoice. But when the wicked are in power, they groan.
TODAY’S INSIGHT – 28th September 2026 .
Regardless of the perils of leadership and promotion, I hope you will never forget Proverbs 29:2. In this proverb, Solomon gave us a tremendous truth. When born-again people are promoted to places of increased leadership in their companies, the individuals underneath them will rejoice because of their “righteous” rule. How much better this is than to have the wicked promoted, who would bring with them all the tentacles of corruption and compromise.
Nehemiah accepted his appointment to governor. Our prayer should be that God will raise up more Christians in strategic spots: college professors, university presidents, business executives, filmmakers, artists, governors, senators, and others who can fashion and frame the minds of the public. There are already some Christians in these roles, but not nearly enough.
Nehemiah immediately faced four major concerns that confront anyone who receives a promotion. All four can be found in Nehemiah 5:14–18.
- Every promotion brings privileges. Increased responsibility always affords the recipient new or added rights, benefits, and special favors. The wise leader will use them without abusing them. Nehemiah said that for those twelve years “neither I nor my kinsmen have eaten the governor’s food allowance” (5:14 NASB). As governor, he had the food at his fingertips, but he never lost control.
- When you receive a promotion, expect to face the complications of your predecessor’s policies, both good and bad. Nehemiah’s challenge was to come into office after a corrupt government. The people were used to dirty politics. But Nehemiah stood firm: “I did not do so because of the fear of God” (5:15 NASB). He said in effect, “I have a job to do, the God of heaven promoted me to do it, and I answer to Him.”
- Every promotion comes with a set of projects that must be completed. Nehemiah did not accept the position of governor so he could engage in his own pet enterprises. He stayed at the task of building the wall. He never lost sight of the goal.
- Leading is a people-oriented job. You have no leader if you have no people. Nehemiah never neglected his project, but he also kept the needs of the people in clear focus. He led with compassion. He allowed his concern for the people to influence how he carried out policies.
