Read: 2 Samuel 5:6-12 (NKJV)
- And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who spoke to David, saying, “You shall not come in here; but the blind and the lame will repel you,” thinking, “David cannot come in here.”
- Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion (that [is,] the City of David).
- Now David said on that day, “Whoever climbs up by way of the water shaft and defeats the Jebusites (the lame and the blind, [who are] hated by David’s soul), [he shall be chief and captain.”] Therefore they say, “The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.”
- Then David dwelt in the stronghold, and called it the City of David. And David built all around from the Millo and inward.
- So David went on and became great, and the LORD God of hosts [was] with him.
- Then Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters and masons. And they built David a house.
- So David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel, and that He had exalted His kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.
ANGLICAN COMMUNION DEVOTIONAL OUTLINE FOR 23RD JULY 2025.
As soon as David ascended the throne as the king over Israel, he took a strong decision by stepping out of the south of Palestine which happened to be the territory of his own tribe, and moved to the northern part. David by his decision and right choice, gained the full and sincere support of both southern and northern Israel. He therefore ruled and reigned over Israel as a unified nation. He became greater and greater, for the LORD of hosts was with him. He knew that the Lord had established his reign over Israel and that He had exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people, Israel. David knew the source of his strength and victory and he stayed true to God in all his endeavours. Even when he got it wrong, he quickly reconnected to God in true repentance (Psalm 51:8-12). David’s secret for becoming a successful and great king was his reverence for God. No wonder God described him as a man after His (God’s) heart (I Samuel 13:14). He never fought for or manipulated his way to the throne. When it seemed that he had a great opportunity to kill Saul, he refused to take unlawful advantage (1 Samuel 24:1-7). David was not perfect but he was a man who feared the Lord and walked with Him wholeheartedly.
As a Christian, remember that greatness in life is not measured by material possession but rather by connection to God. Don’t engage in acts or practices that will cut you off from the Lord and make you fall short of the joy and blessing of being in His presence.
PRAYER: Dear Lord, please give me the grace to fear You and walk with You wholeheartedly. Amen!
