23:1. A Psalm of David. The LORD [is] my shepherd; I shall not want.
23:2. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.
23:3. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.
23:4. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You [are] with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
23:5. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
23:6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.
ANGLICAN COMMUNION DEVOTIONAL OUTLINE FOR 21ST JANUARY 2024.
The passage today is David’s personal testimony of his experiences with God. Having come close to death severally and yet obtaining God’s deliverance, he testified to the fact that God is an unfailing Shepherd of His people. As a result, he was confident about his present circumstances and of grace in the future. He believed that ‘valley times’ were appointed for His good.
Therefore, he stayed close, and trusted in God’s protection and guidance all the way saying, “The Lord is my shepherd.” In this life, problems will not be absent; your very existence will even be threatened. However, a child of God must let his/her confidence be in God at such times. There is no dark valley that you will go through alone.
The Lord-your Good Shepherd-will be with you. Only fix your eyes on and stick close to Him. Be confident in this-that your Shepherd knows the way through the valley and has good reasons for taking you through such route. Something better is waiting for you on the other side of the valley. However, be sure you enter a covenant relationship with God through Jesus Christ. This alone, is the basis for your confidence.
PRAYER: Father, help me to find my confidence in you and rise above every storm in my life, Amen.
