Sarah woke troubled. In her dream the night before, she saw herself losing her job, and all day she couldn’t shake the fear. She spoke nervously to her friends, made decisions out of anxiety, and carried a heaviness in her heart—all because of a dream.
But Scripture invites us to see dreams differently. Through the prophet Jeremiah, God draws a sharp line: “The prophet who has a dream, let him tell a dream; and he who has My word, let him speak My word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat?” says the Lord.” (Jeremiah 23:28 NKJV).
Dreams, Jeremiah says, are like chaff—the husks that blow away in the wind when wheat is threshed. They may seem impressive, even alarming, but they have no weight, no substance.
The Word of God, however, is wheat: nourishing, grounding, life-giving. In the Old Testament, God sometimes used dreams to guide His people. But with the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, a greater way was given.
Now God speaks by His Spirit and through His Word, not through dreams that confuse or mislead. That means Christians are not to be guided by what they see in the night but by the eternal Word that never changes.
To live by dreams is to cling to chaff; to live by the Spirit and the Word is to hold the grain that feeds and sustains. So if fear rises from a dream, discard it. If a vision in the night troubles you, release it to the wind. Anchor yourself instead in what is sure: “…The word of the Lord endures forever…” (1 Peter 1:25 NKJV).
