MEMORY VERSE: “So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.” – Romans 8:8 (KJV)
BIBLE TEXT: 1 John 2:15-17 (KJV)
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
LESSON INTRODUCTION:
Fellowship means friendly association with people who share one’s interests, a group of people meeting to pursue a shared interest or aim. Fellowship with God is therefore building a special relationship with God that allows us to grow in Biblical knowledge, build lasting bonds and participate in God’s divine plan for our life. John 14:23. Our knowledge of God’s word helps us to know more of His ways Psalm 119:105 with the help of the Holy Spirit. John 14:26, John 15:5. However, we must be aware that the devil’s business is to break our fellowship with God through the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and pride of life. John 1, John 2:16. 1 Peter 5:5-9. We must therefore walk with the Holy Spirit so that we will not fulfil the desires of the flesh which break our fellowship with God. Galatians 5:16
TEXT REVIEW: 1 John 2:15-17
- Apostle John admonishes us not to develop deep affection for the things of the world because they will shift our attention from God Romans 8:8. We will no longer hunger to please God because the devil controls the things of the world and as children of God, we cannot develop deep affection for them 1 John 5:19.
- The devil is in charge of the world, he will constantly attempt to manipulate us to always desire food, comfort, etc (lust of the flesh); beautiful things like houses, cars, men, women, etc (lust of the eyes) and our desire to succeed, for recognition, for prosperity, for honour and respect, etc (pride of life) – 1 John 2:16. The bible records in Matthew 4: 1-11 that he attempted same with our Lord Jesus when He was on the earth like us. Though we require food, clothing, housing, etc to live in this world, our attention, passions and focus should not be on them but on God trusting Him to provide all that we desire in this world. You cannot serve two Masters, it is either God or the devil Matthew 6:24-26.
- We must therefore be conscious of who we are in Christ and resist the advances of the devil so that he will not succeed in his constant attempts to break our fellowship with God, our Father. 1 Peter 5:8-11
LESSON OUTLINE ONE: THE HINDRANCES
a) Sin: Sin is defined as disobedience to God’s word and instructions which results in placing a man/woman under the control of the devil who is in charge of worldly affairs 2 Corinthians 4:4. The devil places his mark on any man or woman involved in sin. S – I – N: Satan’s – Identification – Number. God cannot fellowship with a man/woman walking about with Satan’s identification number. Isaiah 59:1-2. Habakkuk 1:12-13. We will look at some examples of sin (not exclusive) that hinder our fellowship with God.
- Pride: God hates pride as stated in Proverbs 6:16-19, therefore God resists the proud. God cannot fellowship with the man/woman that He resists. Hebrew 4:6-8
- Lust: 1 John 2:16 admonishes us that lust (strong sexual desire) is not of God but of the world. Lust is the devil’s weapon to make man break fellowship with God. Colossians 3:5,1 Peter 2:11, Galatians 5:16
- Disobedience: Disobedience is rebellion against the words and instructions of God. In 1 Samuel 15:22-24, Prophet Samuel likened disobedience to witchcraft which is of the devil. You cannot be rebellious against God and maintain fellowship with Him. John 14:15
- Unforgiveness: Colossians 3:12-13 admonishes us to forgive one another because God will not forgive us our own sins if we fail to forgive others. Matthew 6:12. If God does not forgive us our sins, how can we fellowship with Him? Hebrews 12:14, Matthew 6:14
- Strife. James 3:16 tells us that there is always confusion and evil where there is strife and God cannot behold any form of evil. Habakkuk 1:13. If God cannot behold evil, then He cannot fellowship with you.
b) Lack of Fellowship: James 4:8 admonishes us to draw close to God because that is God’s will for man. John 4:23-24 tell us that God desires our fellowship. In addition, when we fellowship with other brethren, it helps to mould us in the image of God, Hebrews 10:25, Proverbs 27:17. When we fail in the place of fellowship with God and other believers, we loose our connection with God. John 15:4-5
c) Indiscipline/Lack of self-control. Proverbs 25:28 tells us that the man/woman that cannot discipline himself/herself is like a city that is broken down, and without walls because your body is flesh and will want to obey the dictates of the devil. 1 Corinthians 9:27 admonishes us to constantly subject our flesh and body to discipline otherwise we will loose our connection and fellowship with God.
d) Evil associations/relationship: Psalm 1:1-3 tells us that only the man/woman that does not associate with evil men will be blessed by God. This is because evil relationship will corrupt your heart thereby break your fellowship with God. 1 Corinthians 15:33, 2 Corinthians 6:14-18
e) Compromise: Compromise for a Christian is the acceptance of standards that are lower than what is stated in the word of God and this is very rampant in these times. Proverbs 25:26 warns us that any Christian that compromises is polluted (NLT) and a polluted heart cannot fellowship with God Psalm 24:3-4.
LESSON OUTLINE TWO: THE REMEDIES
a) Genuine Repentance: Acts 3:19 assures us that if we repent from our sins and retrace our steps back to the Lord Jesus, HE will forgive us our sins and refresh us with His presence by His Holy Spirit. The blood of Jesus will cleanse us and restore us back to fellowship with God. 1 John 1:7
b) Genuine love for God: Our Lord Jesus has told us in Matthew 22:37-40 to love God with all our heart, soul and mind. This means putting God first in everything and seeking to please Him all the time. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 tells us that when we love someone, we do wrong things against that person but rather be patient and wait for Him to fulfil His promises to us. Jesus showed us the example of genuine love for God in Luke 22:42 when he declared that though his flesh would rather not be crucified but God’s will must be done because He loved the Lord absolutely. John3:34.
c) Flee of appearance of evil. 1 Thessalonians 5:22 admonishes us to run, flee, abstain from anything that is not right. The Message version says we should always check out everything, and keep only what’s good and throw out anything tainted with evil. When we do this, our hearts and lives will be God’s dwelling place and we will have constant fellowship with Him and He will direct our paths daily. Psalm 51:10-11, 2 Corinthians 6:16
d) Commitment to study God’s word: 2 Timothy 2:15 and Joshua 1:8 admonish us to be committed to studying the word of God, obey and keep God’s word to heart. God’s word will guide us daily and by this we will maintain our fellowship with Him. Psalm 119:9
e) Separation from evil associations/relationships: 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 admonishes us to separate ourselves from evil/ungodly relationships as these relationships will influence us negatively. 1 Corinthians 15:33, Amos 3:3. When you break all ungodly relationships/activities (village customs, traditional groups, etc) and focus on your relationship with God, He will dwell with you daily and reveal Himself to you daily. Colossians 3:16-17
f) Self-disciple/denial: Paul in 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 talks about self- discipline, putting our flesh under subjection to be able to fulfil God’s purpose because the flesh is always pushing to obey the devil. Galatians 5:17. Proverbs 25:28 says that man/woman that cannot discipline himself/herself is like a city that is broken down and without walls. Self-discipline involves self-denial and setting time to fast, pray, study, fellowship with God and to work for God. All these require deny ourselves of pleasure and other activities that our flesh would rather want us to do. Daniel 1:8, 2 Corinthians 4:16-17, 1 Corinthians 6:12-15. The more you are able to discipline your flesh, the more the spirit of God take charge of your life and the more fellowship you will have with God.
SUMMARY: Believers cannot maintain relationship with God if you allow the devil to tempt and overcome you with sin Habakkuk 1:13.
CONCLUSION: The good news is that God has given us the power to overcome sin, Romans 6:14, 1 Corinthians 10:13. We must therefore make up our minds to develop our relationship with the Lord by spending time in studying His word and prayerfully let His word be the template for our lives under the guidance of the Holy Spirit to maintain constant fellowship with God, our father. Psalm 119:11.
