Memory Verse: Exodus 4:11–12
Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak.
Today’s Scripture & Insight: Exodus 4:10-17
When God called Moses to deliver the Hebrews from Egyptian bondage (Exodus 3:1–4:17), Moses protested, giving various excuses why he wasn’t the right candidate. He questioned his own identity (3:11); his lack of authority (v. 13); and his suitability, credibility, and acceptability (4:1). He had tried this role previously but was outrightly rejected by his own people. No longer a prince, Moses had been a fugitive and lowly shepherd for the past forty years (2:11–15). But God assured him of His personal involvement (3:14–15) and His powerful presence (vv. 16–20; 4:1–9). In Moses’ fourth excuse, he argued that he lacked the eloquence of a leader (4:10). God promised that He would empower him to speak powerfully and effectively (v. 12). Running out of excuses, Moses asked God to “please send someone else” (v. 13), unveiling the real reason behind his reluctance. He eventually accepted the assignment, and God empowered him as promised (see Acts 7:22).

ODB MESSAGE FOR TODAY
John felt called to ordained ministry but lost his sight. Assuming he wouldn’t be able to lead because of his blindness, for years he begged God for healing. One day, in Southwark Cathedral, feeling abandoned by God, he burst into angry prayer, till eventually he was exhausted. Then he sensed a voice: “John, do you think I am so small as to need to heal you to include you?” Overwhelmed by God’s love, his whole attitude changed, and instantly he was unashamed of his blindness and became confident to serve as himself. He has now been a church leader for over thirty years.
Moses felt similarly unable to fulfil God’s calling because of a disability. “I am slow of speech and tongue”, he protests, when God calls him (Exodus 4:10). Extraordinarily, God says that he made him that way, “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who . . . makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord?” (v. 11). We need to read this in the context of the whole Bible: where disability brings suffering or isolation, Jesus is swift to provide. But this disability wasn’t in that category, it just affected Moses’ confidence. Although Moses was given Aaron to speak for him, he never needed him. He was called as he was.
If you feel inadequate to serve God, perhaps especially because of your body, draw comfort in God’s calling of Moses. God knows us, has made us and will equip us.
