BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Joshua 7:16-9:2, Luke 16:1-18, Psalm 82:1-8, Proverbs 13:2-3

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Luke 19:1-10

1 And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.
2 And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.
3 And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.
4 And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.
5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for today I must abide at thy house.
6 And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.
7 And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.
8 And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken anything from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.
9 And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.
10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

MFM Daily Devotional Message Sunday 13th April 2025.

Restitution is giving back what was taken, lost, damaged, or stolen to the owner. It is a Christian principle deeply rooted in the righteousness and justice of God. Restitution is more than just making amends for wrongs committed; it also includes seeking reconciliation with those who have been hurt by one’s action or inaction.

In Luke 19:8, we see Zacchaeus, a tax collector, who encountered Jesus and afterward declared, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken anything from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.” Zacchaeus recognized his wrongdoing and was willing to make restitution to those he had wronged. In Exodus 22:1, we read about restitution in the Old Testament law: “If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.” This passage emphasizes the importance of restoring what was taken from others and making things right in the sight of God.

True repentance involves turning away from sin and making amends for the wrongs we have committed (Acts 3:19). In Matthew 5:23-24, Jesus taught us the importance of reconciling with others before offering our gifts at the altar. It says, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, you need to leave your gift there in front of the altar, first go and be reconciled to them and then come and offer your gift so that your repentance can be complete, showing your sincerity of heart and purpose.

Also, very importantly, restitution enables us to walk in righteousness and integrity. It shows that we are committed to living according to God’s standard.
