11. And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren.
12. And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
13. And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow?
14. And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known.

DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
INTRODUCTION
Self management, in the negative sense, is a situation where somebody controls and manages his life the way he feels and wants without recourse to God and patiently wait for divine guidance. Moses attempted it, though he was a man of destiny. He eventually learnt his lesson after forty years of his life were, humanly speaking, wasted with his father-in-law called Jethro. The children of Israel did the same in the wilderness. A time came when they waited not for his counsel and they decided to go back to Egypt. Many of them perished (Numbers 14:4,10). While Moses had his destiny delayed for 40 years, a lot of children of Israel perished in the wilderness. So self management is never taken lightly by God.
1. Service without Good Conscience
a. From all indications, the mother of Moses and his sister might have found a way to the palace after Moses was returned to the palace and they used the occasion to strengthen the conviction of Moses that he did not belong to the world of the Egyptians, but that he belonged to the people of God. “And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren.” There would be no way that Moses could have been visiting his brethren without visiting his parents and siblings. At this time, Moses had received the impression and destiny vision that he would be used by God to deliver Israel. But he was ignorant of divine timing and prerequisites to be used by God. He had deep empathy when he saw the heavy burden the children of Israel were subjected to and he believed that one day he would be used to deliver his people.
There will always be a holy passion for what God wants to use you for. “And looked on their burdens.” Those that God will use to deliver others must have their heart touched with sympathy and love for the people who need deliverance. It is not a mechanical use by God, there must be the heart of burden and compassion first. Most often we read it in the days of Jesus that “He was moved with compassion.” It is compassion that drives sacrifice and faith for the deliverance of others.
b. “He spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren.” He took the law in his hands because he thought the time had come to start fulfilling his vision. “For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not” (Acts 7:25). Based on this, he decided to kill one of the oppressors of his people. But it was self management because it was not God’s time and Moses had not been specifically commissioned by God for the task, and neither had he had an encounter with the God of the work.
“And he looked this way and that way.” Why did he do this? His conscience told him that it was evil and that nobody should know or see it. He opted to silence his conscience and thought to do the evil without anyone knowing. At the end of the day, he was guilty of shedding the blood of the innocent. “And when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.”
Such is the way of those who are pursuing their personal ambitions without personal encounter with God. They are willing to trample over honesty, holy living, good conscience and righteousness in order to meet up with their ambitions. Why was Moses in a rush to start his ministry of deliverance without an encounter with God that will instil the needed righteousness and virtues into his life? His reasons might be sincere, but God does not work that way. Character and virtue development should be the priority of those that want to walk and work with God.
“Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ” (1 Peter 3:16).
Summary: The need to patiently allow God to guide in all our decisions without allowing self management, because the end result of self management is bitter.
Question: Do you patiently follow God and allow Him to guide you in your steps and decisions?
2. Secrets Grossly Circulated
a. The uncircumcised (in heart) Moses thought it was a secret known to him alone and the Israelite that was delivered. He was wrong. Many evil doers wrongly believe they can hide their evils from others for long. First, the evils that men do can never be hidden from God. The secret evil that evil men do on earth is an open scandal in heaven. It is foolishness and self-deception to think a man can hide anything from God who created the eyes. “There is no creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him with whom we have to do” (Hebrews 4:13). Those who attempt to hide from God have a divine curse on them. “Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark” (Isaiah 29:15).
b. Moses never conceived that the evil he did would ever leak to any man, but it did. “When he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow?” He continued with his pre-matured deliverance ministry with the mind that no other person would know the evil secret, but alas, it had become an open knowledge that even Pharaoh was aware of it. “And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known.”
There are hidden truths of people’s evil actions that are revealed as soon as they happen. The case of Moses is an example. Also the killing of Abel by Cain is another example. There are some other hidden truths that will take some time to manifest, but all the same cannot be hidden. In fact, “your sins will find you out.”
Achan in Joshua 7 secretly sinned, but with time, he was exposed. There are also some hidden truths that will not be revealed until the final White Throne Judgment. Whatever be the case, concealing the truth without repentance and restitution is like hiding behind one of your fingers. Jesus repeatedly and emphatically said “there is NOTHING hidden that shall not be revealed” (Luke 12:2, Luke 8:17, Matthew 10:26).
The best way to solve the problem of secret sins is to confess them to God with repentance and be sure that God will wipe away the sins by the blood of Jesus. “For I will be merciful unto their unrighteousness, and your sins and iniquity will I remember no more” (Hebrews 8:12).
Question: Do you accept that you cannot hide from God and that your evils will be exposed either now, later, or in eternity?
3. Sacrifice Greatly Condemned
The premature sacrifice of Moses was not even acceptable by those he attempted to deliver. When you take steps or make moves without patiently allowing God to qualify you and make you ready, the end result is always frustrations, fruitlessness, failures and faithlessness. “And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us?” Because he was only intellectually ready, but not spiritually ready, he could not survive the opposition to his ministry. He fled, unlike those who personally had encounters with God and received a clear call of God, but overcame their challenges.
Question: Are you facing fruitfulness, failures, fallings and faithlessness in your assigned work? Check if you are moving according to God’s will or word, or you are full of self management.
PRAYER POINTS:
Lord, show me areas I have been full of self management and give me the grace to fully submit to Your clear guidance.
Lord, help me not to serve You and perish.
Let me never be a prey of self deceivers that think that God is not seeing them.
Deliver all Your children from self management and the tendency towards self management.
