DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
A story is told of a wealthy man who died after a brief illness. Before his burial, his wife placed a cheque bearing a huge sum of money on his chest, saying, “It’s his money, and he loved it so much — I thought he should take it to the grave.” Her gesture vividly captured the futility of material attachment.
Likewise, the Psalmist teaches that trusting in wealth is a mark of folly. He called on “all inhabitants of the world, both low and high, rich and poor” to understand that riches cannot redeem a soul. No amount of money can buy salvation or eternal life.
Riches may buy fame, properties, and social status, but they cannot prevent death or purchase eternal security. When death comes, wealth, titles, and possessions become meaningless. The Psalmist concludes that such people “perish like the beasts that perish.” Their glory fades in the grave, but the righteous will live on before God.
Therefore, while we live, we must use our resources to serve God and bless others, not to boast or secure earthly recognition. Jesus warned:
“Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt… For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:20–21)
Let us remember that only what is done for Christ will last. Salvation, holy living, and good works are the true treasures that follow us beyond the grave.
