DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY

There are people who believe that it does not matter how success is achieved, how fame is acquired, or how promotion is gained. To them, the end justifies the means. Such individuals often reject correction, despise criticism, and refuse counsel. Sadly, by shutting out instruction, they lose the opportunity to learn from the wisdom and experiences of others, and eventually find themselves facing disappointment, failure, or disgrace.

Solomon, the wise preacher, had observed life closely and concluded that those who shun counsel, detest correction, and reject instruction are accidents waiting to happen.

Such people are usually self-conceited and headed for condemnation because they fail to recognise that obtaining favour from God requires good conduct and godly character. No matter how intelligent or skilful a person may be, true success cannot be built on wickedness, but must be rooted in righteousness.

In this passage, Solomon carefully contrasts the wicked with the righteous. He notes that virtue is what makes a woman a crown to her husband, while rotten character brings shame. The wicked thrive on deceit, but the righteous stand firmly on truth. The wicked lay ambush to gain advantage, but the upright are delivered through righteous testimony. In the end, the wicked are overthrown, while the righteous are firmly established.

Whatever our circumstances, we must remember that lasting success comes only when our lives are patterned after God’s righteous standards. We must humbly embrace the teachings of Scripture and live according to God’s commands. Pride and arrogance, which hinder people from learning vital lessons for both this life and eternity, must be avoided.

As we pursue success, we must also pursue the will of God. We should never accept success that comes at the expense of good character and virtue. Cheating, oppression, compromise, or a loss of integrity in the quest for success amounts to a tragic failure in life’s most important test.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

Success obtained at the expense of character is toxic.

THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:

Deuteronomy 17–20
