DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY

Americans have celebrated Thanksgiving on the last Thursday of November since 1621, when a group of Pilgrims shared a feast with friendly Native Americans.

However, historical accounts reveal that the first recorded American Thanksgiving occurred earlier, in Virginia in 1610. It was not a feast but a solemn prayer gathering.

After a harsh winter reduced 409 settlers to 60, the survivors prayed earnestly for help. Their prayers were answered when a ship arrived with food and supplies from England, prompting them to hold a thanksgiving prayer service to honour God.

In today’s Bible passage, God commanded the Israelites to observe the Feasts of Firstfruits and Weeks (Pentecost) at the beginning of every harvest season.

These feasts were essentially thanksgiving services set aside to honour God for providing a bountiful harvest. The Israelites were reminded that their increase was not a result of their soil, skill, or labour alone but the blessing of God.

During these feasts, they were required to bring offerings with joy, acknowledging God as their true Provider. Interestingly, God also commanded them to remember the poor and strangers during their harvest—a powerful reminder of compassion and generosity.

These divinely appointed feasts serve as a model for believers today. They emphasise the importance of thanksgiving, reflection, and recognising God’s faithfulness.

For Christians, firstfruits symbolise soul-winning, as Jesus teaches that the harvest of souls is ripe (John 4:34–38). Therefore, firstfruits are not about bringing one’s first salary or produce to a pastor, but about expressing gratitude to God, sharing the gospel, and showing kindness to the needy.

As we celebrate the abundance God provides, we must also remember to deliberately bless those who have less.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

Our regular thanksgiving and generosity attract divine favour.

THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:

Hosea 10–14
