DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
Ravi Art Vernon once narrated the story of Rabbi Moses ben Nachman, also known as Nachmanides, who left Spain in the 13th century in search of peace and beauty in Jerusalem.
Contrary to his lofty expectations, he found the city in ruins, inhabited by a small and impoverished Jewish community. The reality deeply disappointed him, as the earthly Jerusalem fell short of the glorious, heavenly image he had long cherished.
Psalm 87 belongs to the group of scriptures known as the Psalms of Zion. These psalms celebrate the significance and glory of Jerusalem as the city of God.
However, beyond recalling the historical Jerusalem where God once dwelt among His people, the psalm points to something greater—a city yet to come. It reminds us that the ultimate fulfilment of Zion is not found in any earthly city but in a future, heavenly reality.
The disappointment experienced by Rabbi Moses Ben Nachman centuries ago mirrors what many still feel today.
Jerusalem remains a city marked by tension, insecurity, and conflict rather than the peace and safety portrayed in Scripture. The hope of finding lasting peace in the earthly Jerusalem continues to be shattered by violence and fear.
The true Zion, however, is the heavenly city prepared by God Himself. It is a place of perfect joy, peace, and eternal rest. Christ has gone ahead to prepare mansions for the saints.
Its streets are of pure gold, sorrow and tears are wiped away, and there is no night—God Himself is its light. There is no need for prisons, security forces, or laws, because sin has no place there.
This glorious city is worth living for, waiting for, and working toward. Preparation begins now by surrendering fully to Jesus Christ and living in readiness for the heavenly Zion.
