The background to this passage is that the gospel had been clearly taught and well understood by the Galatian believers. However, after Apostle Paul left, some Judaizers infiltrated the church and distorted the truth.
They falsely claimed that salvation still depended on circumcision and obedience to the Mosaic Law, asserting that faith alone in Christ was insufficient. This teaching diminished the sufficiency of Christ’s atoning sacrifice and the completeness of the New Testament covenant.
Paul was astonished and deeply grieved that the Galatians would abandon justification by faith and return to legalism. The only explanation he could give for such a drastic shift was that they had been “bewitched.”
In today’s world, similar distortions of the faith abound. Some practices and celebrations that appear harmless subtly draw people away from God. Halloween, for instance, is rooted in occultism, witchcraft, and the veneration of spirits and the dead. Witches, warlocks, and sorcerers celebrate it with zeal comparable to how Christians celebrate Christmas.
Likewise, Valentine’s Day is often portrayed as a celebration of love, but in reality, it has frequently become an avenue for lust, immorality, and moral compromise. God warns His people to avoid practices that are ungodly and demonic because they provoke His displeasure.
As we approach the end of this age, false teachers are increasing, just as Scripture foretold. One dangerous form of deception is the teaching that believers can live carelessly because grace will always cover them.
We must not fall under such spells. Instead, we are called to earnestly contend for the faith once delivered to the saints and to fight the good fight of faith by standing firmly for sound doctrine.
