DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
In Bits & Pieces (January 9, 1992), the following story is told: When Jan Paderewski was about to leave his native Poland for his first piano recital in London, he requested a letter of introduction from an influential compatriot.
The letter was meant to assist him in case of unforeseen difficulties. He received the letter in a sealed envelope, hoping never to need it—and indeed, his debut was a great success. Years later, while sorting through his papers, he discovered and opened the letter.
To his shock, it read: “This will introduce Jan Paderewski, who plays the piano, for which he demonstrates no conspicuous talent.” Had he relied on that letter, he would have failed.
Life, in many ways, is a battlefield where opposing forces and ideas constantly contend for dominance. Unfortunately, the things people often depend on—skills, influence, resources, or connections—are insufficient for lasting victory unless God is involved.
In today’s text, the sons of Reuben, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh assembled a formidable army of 44,760 valiant men, well-armed with shields, swords, bows, and arrows.
Yet, their triumph was not a result of military strength, strategy, or numbers. Scripture clearly states that “they were helped against the Hagarites.” Victory came through divine assistance.
Believers must recognize that spiritual warfare is a daily reality. The devil never relents in his attacks, seeking to undermine faith and destroy lives. Interestingly, the enemies in this passage were descendants of Ishmael, a familiar lineage.
Likewise, Satan wages relentless war against believers out of envy, because we possess the inheritance and privilege he lost forever. His mission, though doomed to fail, is our destruction.
Therefore, Christians must remain watchful and prayerful to avoid spiritual ambush. Divine intervention must be sought in every situation. In this account, help came only after “they cried to God in the battle.”
We must not wait until battles become overwhelming before calling on the Lord. Prayer should be continuous—before, during, and after every conflict. After victory, thanksgiving and praise must follow.
Those who put their full trust in God, making Him their refuge and strength, will never be defeated. Divine assistance guarantees victory.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
God is trustworthy—stop worrying and start trusting.
