DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
Many of Christ’s teachings were delivered in response to questions from His disciples and the people around Him. Asking questions when we do not understand is both proper and necessary for spiritual growth. However, in today’s passage, the disciples were afraid to ask Jesus about a matter of eternal significance.
Jesus repeatedly spoke about His betrayal, death, and resurrection. Unfortunately, the disciples could not reconcile this message with their expectation of a political Messiah who would overthrow Roman rule and establish an earthly kingdom.
They imagined themselves occupying prominent positions in that kingdom. Because of these preconceived ideas, they failed to grasp the deeper truths Christ was teaching and were afraid to seek clarification—perhaps fearing correction or an answer they did not want to hear.
Instead of seeking understanding about God’s redemptive plan, the disciples focused on debating who among them would be the greatest.
This revealed their misplaced priorities. Like many people today, they were driven by ambition, rank, and recognition rather than humility and service. Jesus, knowing the thoughts of their hearts, countered this attitude by using a child as an illustration of true greatness—one marked by humility, meekness, and selfless service.
Children are not driven by the desire for power or control; they serve willingly and depend completely on others.
Jesus teaches us that greatness in God’s Kingdom is measured not by status but by humility and willingness to serve. We must therefore seek the right understanding of Kingdom principles and align our priorities with what truly matters to God.
