DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
Odette Sansome was a British spy during World War 2 who encouraged planting a ruse among the Germans that she was married to a nephew of the British Prime Minister, Peter Churchill. She took on his surname. However, Peter was another spy who bore no relationship with Winston Churchill beyond the similarity in surname. When eventually Odette was captured by the Nazis, the prank seemed to work.
The Germans spared her from execution, the fate that awaited all spies. Even after she was condemned to death, the sentence was not carried out because someone was keeping her as a potential bargaining chip with the British. They were convinced they held a high-value prisoner, and she gladly did nothing to correct the impression. When the Germans began to lose the war, a top-level Nazi officer took personal custody of Odette and drove across enemy lines to surrender himself and deliver her to the Allies as a sign of good faith. He wanted amnesty in return. Instead, he was disarmed, arrested and made to rue the foolishness of his assumption.
Used under false pretences, a name saved a clever spy from death. No one, however, should presume to claim the name and glory that belong to God alone, under any guise or circumstance, or for any purpose. God is the Almighty, unique, and peerless. His glory surpasses all, and His power is unlimited. He deserves to be worshipped rather than any angel or prominent religious figure.
Some misguided religious groups have established a system of worship that seeks to deify their founders, elevating them almost to the same pedestal as the omnipotent God. Such a practice has no place among the worshippers of the true God. King Herod, in his vainglorious fanfare, received adulation due only to a deity, and he was instantly struck down by an angel.
We should be wary of praise singers who tend to go over the top in their sycophantic admiration, usually pursuing some personal advantage. Do not permit anyone to set you up in conflict with God; it does not end well.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God is the eternal One, and He alone is worthy of worship.
THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Psalms 119:1-56
