DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
During World War II, the German offensive into southern Russia in the summer of 1942 initially appeared unstoppable. The German Sixth Army, under General Friedrich von Paulus, was ordered to capture the city of Stalingrad.
Joseph Stalin, the Soviet leader, commanded that the city be defended at all costs. Months of brutal street fighting followed, with massive casualties on both sides. In November 1942, Soviet forces launched a counteroffensive that encircled the German army.
After prolonged suffering and starvation, about 91,000 German soldiers surrendered on February 2, 1943—an unprecedented and humiliating defeat for Nazi Germany.
Our Bible text recounts a similar story of overconfidence and divine intervention. Israel, under King Ahab, faced the Syrian army led by King Benhadad. Syria had already exerted control over Israel, but Benhadad became increasingly arrogant, boasting of his superior forces, including thirty-two allied kings.
Although Ahab initially yielded to his demands, the elders of Israel advised resistance when the demands became excessive. War became inevitable, and Benhadad was convinced of an easy victory.
However, God sent a prophet to Ahab with a clear message of assurance and victory. Despite Israel’s numerical disadvantage, God promised deliverance so that His supremacy would be known.
As the prophet declared, Israel’s small force of 232 provincial leaders and 7,000 men defeated the vast Syrian army. Benhadad’s pride and overconfidence proved fatal.
Instead of preparing for battle, he was feasting and drinking, assuming the fight was already won. His instructions to capture the Israelites alive became a mockery of his own downfall.
This account teaches us to trust God rather than be intimidated by appearances. Victory does not depend on numbers, strength, or alliances but on divine backing. While we must plan and prepare responsibly, it is God who fights our battles when we submit to His direction.
The contrasting leadership styles of Ahab and Benhadad are instructive: Benhadad trusted in his power, allies, and false gods, while Ahab humbled himself enough to seek divine counsel.
The lesson is clear: the higher we rise in life, the closer we must walk with God. When God takes up our cause, no opposition—however formidable—can prevail.
