DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
History offers sobering examples of how destructive division and prolonged disputes can become. The 1994 Rwandan Genocide, rooted in deep ethnic tensions between Hutu and Tutsi groups and inflamed by political and social conflicts, resulted in the tragic loss of over 800,000 lives.
Though the nation has made significant strides toward healing, the scars of that crisis remain a solemn reminder of the damage that unchecked hostility and divisive rhetoric can cause.
In today’s passage, the Apostle Paul warns Timothy against engaging in wordy disputes that produce no spiritual benefit. Such arguments, he explains, do not edify but rather subvert the hearers.
Instead of participating in fruitless debates, believers are urged to study and rightly divide the Word of truth. A solid grounding in Scripture equips Christians to discern truth from error without becoming entangled in unnecessary controversies.
This warning is especially relevant today. Many believers expend energy debating non-essential issues while neglecting the central mission of the Church. As arguments escalate, the Church’s witness can be weakened, and unbelievers may perceive Christianity as divided and contentious. Meanwhile, the urgent task of proclaiming the gospel is sidelined.
Senseless debates often spring from pride and lead to further division. They drain time, energy, and spiritual vitality. Rather than strengthening faith, they can foster resentment, offence, and fragmentation within the body of Christ. When believers focus more on winning arguments than winning souls, the true purpose of the Church is compromised.
The enemy delights when Christians are distracted by controversies that neither promote holiness nor advance the gospel. Let us, therefore, pursue edifying conversations, uphold sound doctrine with humility, and remain focused on Christ’s mission.
