DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
Oliver Cooke composed a modern Christian chorus titled “I Know a Fount.” Its simple but profound lyrics declare a timeless truth:
“I know a fount where sins are washed away;
I know a place where night is turned to day.
Burdens are lifted; blind eyes made to see.
There’s a wonder-working power in the blood of Calvary.”
When the book of Leviticus opens with instructions concerning the burnt offering under the Mosaic Law, we are introduced to God’s provision for man’s atonement and reconciliation.
The sacrificial system outlined here is rich with spiritual meaning and prophetic symbolism pointing to Christ, the true Lamb of God, whom John the Baptist later proclaimed.
First, the animal had to be slain and its blood poured out at the altar—signifying forgiveness through blood atonement. Second, the sacrifice had to be perfect and without blemish, emphasizing God’s demand for purity.
Third, the offerer was required to lay his hand upon the head of the sacrifice. This act represented personal identification with the offering—acknowledging guilt on one hand and expressing faith in substitution and pardon on the other.
All these principles find their complete fulfilment in Jesus Christ. His blood was shed to atone for our sins.
Though He was sinless and without blemish, He willingly died in the place of sinners. He bore the penalty we deserved and made a way for us to be forgiven and reconciled to God. He alone qualifies as the perfect and acceptable sacrifice.
Importantly, Christ did not live in righteousness merely to demonstrate moral excellence. He did so “that He might sanctify and cleanse the church… that He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle… but holy and without blemish.”
Therefore, we are called to go out to Him “outside the gate,” fully identifying with His sacrifice, allowing His life to be stamped upon our hearts. This is how the deeper work of grace is accomplished—purifying our hearts, filling us with divine love, and freeing us from every inbred sin.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Christ’s atonement is complete, sufficient, and available to all who are willing.
