DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
On his deathbed, Sir Walter Scott, the renowned Scottish poet and novelist, gave a remarkable instruction to his secretary: “Bring me the Book!” When asked which book, he replied, “There is but one book…the only Book for a dying man.” Scott was referring to the Bible — the Word of life, the source of hope in temptation, suffering, and even in death.
Although Job was not physically dying, he was enduring intense emotional and physical suffering. He had lost his children, wealth, and health. His wife and friends, instead of comforting him, worsened his despair.
What Job truly needed was the intervention of God — the One who does not abandon those in distress, whose counsel brings healing and restoration. This was what Elihu pointed him to: a God who rescues man from pride, saves his soul from destruction, and preserves his life from death.
Our world today mirrors Job’s condition. It is plagued with conflicts, instability, and systems that have failed to bring lasting peace. Human wisdom, like the counsel of Job’s friends, has proven inadequate. Instead of hope, it has deepened sorrow. Only God’s Word — spoken in love and truth — can restore stability, purpose, and life.
This is the urgent need of our generation. When God finally spoke to Job, his story changed. Likewise, the Church must boldly proclaim God’s life-giving message of repentance, salvation, and righteousness to a dying world.
Through the Living Word, men and women can rise from spiritual deathbeds into the abundant life found under the care of Jehovah.
