ANGLICAN COMMUNION DEVOTIONAL OUTLINE  FOR 22ND AUGUST 2024.

Our text introduces the list of kings that reigned in the land of Edom, all from the loins of Esau, the brother of Jacob (Israel). The God who watches over His word to perform it had told Jacob “Kings shall come from your body” (Gen. 35:11c). This took several years to come to fulfillment in King Saul (I Sam. 10:24). The high point in our text is verse 31. Notice the preposition “Before.” It is the gap between prophecy and its fulfillment. It revealed the progress Esau had made in bringing forth a multitude of kings and chiefs while Jacob his brother, who has a similar promise from God still awaited the fulfillment of God’s promise in its time.

Jacob understood that following God is an individual commitment. He obeyed and waited for God’s time. Do you feel left behind as you follow the Lord while your mates are making strides? Are you already toeing the path of compromise just to prove a point? Are you overwhelmed with the spirit of competition, forgetting that you are unique? Learn to trust God; for He watches over His word to perform it (Jer. 1: 12). Obey and depend on Him today.

PRAYER: Please Lord, help me to know that I am peculiar and that your dealings with me are different from others.
