For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.
LOVE WORTH FINDING DEVOTIONAL – MESSAGE FOR TODAY.
Many people are baptized pagans. They have united with churches like they have joined country clubs, but they have never been broken over their sin. Repentance is the missing note.
What is godly sorrow? It is not mere regret. Many of us have done things that we regret, and we’re sorry. When I was a child, I did many things I regretted. When my dad found out about them, I would receive consequences, and I immediately regretted what I had done. I knew my mistake was not worth the hard consequences. But regret is not godly sorrow.
Regret is primarily in the mind. Remorse goes past the mind to the heart. But both of these, compared to repentance, are dead-end streets. Repentance is a highway. Remorse looks at the sin and its consequences and cannot see past them. Repentance looks beyond the sin to Calvary.
A person filled with remorse is one who loves his sin and hates himself at the same time. A person who has repented hates his sin because he loves his Savior. That’s the difference. Many people waltz down our church aisles with regret, and others come with remorse. But the only true way forward is repentance.
