OPENING PRAYER: Father, help me to understand the price of Jesus’ atonement.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should allow the assistant teacher to review the lesson for the previous week.

MEMORY VERSE: 2 Corinthians 5:21 (KJV)

For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 John 2:1-6 (KJV)

1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

INTRODUCTION: Atonement is the process or act of making amends for a wrong, harm or injury. It is an avenue for up timing reconciliation between man and God through the price, sacrifice and suffering of Jesus Christ on the cross. With this, the condemned sinner is justified by grace and recognised as a saint. This lesson enlightens the church on the weight of Christ’s sacrifice and the accrued benefits.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: THE COMPONENTS

A. Atonement is what we got when Jesus took the place of man on the cross and took upon him excruciating death that is due to man (Romans 5:8; 1 John 4:10).

B. The core components of this atonement include:

1. Sacrifice: The act of giving a life as an offering to pay for sins (Ephesians 5:2).
2. Substitution: Christ took the place of man to bear the punishment for sin (2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 3:13).
3. Redemption: The act of paying a price to free someone from an obligation or sin (Ephesians 1:7; Hebrews 9:12)

C. Other components are:

4. Propitiation: An action intended to appease a deity, or to change their attitude in a more positive direction. Propitiation connotes the process of appeasing God’s wrath (Romans 3:25; 1 John 2:2).
5. Satisfaction: The idea that a debt must be paid, and atonement involves satisfying this debt through a sufficient offering (Romans 6:23; Hebrews 9:26). The Bible declares that Christ’s suffering, beginning from the Garden of Gethsemane to the point he died on the cross, is sufficient and no other sacrifice is required (Hebrews 10:10-14).
6. Reconciliation: the restoration of a relationship, which is a goal or result of atonement (Romans 5:10; 2 Corinthians 5:18-19).

D. To partake of the provision of atonement, a sinner must confess his sin with his mouth (1 John 1:9), and decide to forsake his old sinful lifestyle (Proverbs 28:13; Ephesians 4:22-24).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should mention practical ways they can “walk as Jesus walked”.

LESSON OUTLINE 2: THE BENEFITS OF ATONEMENT

There are several benefits derived from atonement; a few will suffice here:

1. Atonement offers divine forgiveness, and brings indescribable peace to the human recipient (Colossians 1:20).
2. Atonement turned away the wrath of God from believers (Psalm 85:2-3, John 3:36).
3. It facilitates reconciliation through the sacrifice of Jesus. Turning human condemnation to divine justification (Romans 3:24).
4. Atonement makes assurance of salvation possible with the attendant confidence (Romans 8:1).
5. It makes impartation of righteousness a possibility and reality, and we become empowered to live above sin (2 Corinthians 5:21).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: If God sees and recognises the righteousness of Christ in believers, why is it important for believers to still love righteously?

CONCLUSION: Believers must know that a price was paid for their salvation, and hence this sacrifice must not be taken for granted (Hebrews 6:4-6).

EVALUATION: Teachers should ask the students to explain the three core components of atonement.
