RCCG YAYA Sunday School Teacher Manual Lesson No: 44
OPENING PRAYER: Father, help me understand how doubt works.
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The Assistant Teacher should review the previous week’s lesson with particular attention to the lesson outline.

BIBLE PASSAGE: James 1:6-8 (KJV)
6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
INTRODUCTION: Doubt is a state of being unsure of something. As a common human experience, it often arises during times of uncertainty and suffering, or when we face difficult questions about our faith. Doubt can also emerge when expectations do not match reality, or when people feel resigned to their fate (Luke 1:11-18). However, doubt does not have to mark the end of faith. When approached in the right way, it can become an opportunity for spiritual growth and deeper understanding. This lesson will explore doubt and its potential consequences and different ways to address doubt.
TEXT REVIEW: James 1:6-8.
This passage emphasises that Faith is the antidote to doubt and God does not reckon with a doubtful man.
It reads:

LESSON OUTLINE 1: DOUBT AND ITS CONSEQUENCES
A. Doubt can challenge a believer’s faith at different points in life, just as it does for any human being (James 1:6; Mark 9:24).
i. It often stems from fear, suffering, unanswered prayers, or difficulty in understanding God’s plan (Matthew 14:31; John 20:27).
ii. Doubt can also arise from teachings or beliefs that seem to contradict one’s foundational understanding of faith.
B. Doubting the integrity of God’s word carries serious consequences. For instance:
i. Zechariah was struck mute and deaf for doubting God’s message (Luke 1:11-20).
ii. Naaman almost missed his healing because he doubted God’s instructions (2 Kings 5:10-14).
iii. A lord who doubted God’s promise during the famine lost his life (2Kings 7:19-20).

LESSON OUTLINE 2: ADDRESSING DOUBTS
A. The Bible is the ultimate source of truth and guidance, offering answers to life’s deepest questions (Psalm 119:105, John 17:17).
i. When doubt arises, it is important to hold onto God’s promises, which provide reassurance and hope (Joshua 21:45; 2 Corinthians 1:20).
ii. God’s word encourages us to choose faith over fear and doubt, reminding us that God is always with us (Isaiah 41:10; Romans 8:28).
iii. Regular and in-depth study of the scriptures helps bring clarity and understanding in areas where doubts and conflicting teachings or dogmas may arise (Psalm 119:130; Acts 17:11; 2Timothy 2:15).
B. To combat doubt, we should bring our concerns to God in prayer, trusting that He hears us (Philippians 4:6-7; Psalm 34:4).
i. Trusting God sometimes means leaning on Him even when we do not have all the answers (Proverbs 3:5-6; Isaiah 55:8-9).
ii. It is also wise to seek guidance from mature believers who can help navigate our doubts (Proverbs 11:14; Proverbs 27:17).
iii. Reflect on God’s past faithfulness (Lamentations 3:21-23; Psalm 77:11).
iv. While trials and tribulations may prompt doubt, turning to God for answers and reassurance strengthens our faith (1 Peter 1:6-7; Romans 5:3-4).
CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Are there other things to do when in doubt aside from the points mentioned above?
CONCLUSION: Doubt is a natural part of the human journey. Faith in the potency of God’s word helps to overcome all doubts
EVALUATION: Mention four ways to combat doubts.

ASSIGNMENT: Identify five other people who doubted/queried God’s ability in the Bible with relevant Scriptures to support each (2×5=10 Marks).
