LESSON INTRODUCTION: Etiquette, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is defined as a code (specific rules) of polite behaviour within a culture, society or professional group. Etiquette makes one behave in a responsible way distinct from animals. It applies to various fields of life: social, professional, business, spiritual, etc. When an individual displays respect for rules of behaviour, we say that person has good etiquette or manners. The Bible equally advises us as believers to apply decency and orderliness in whatever we do (1 Corinthians 14:40). Hence, believers must be guided in their dealings and interactions with others.Christianity

1. EXPLAIN THE NEED FOR ETIQUETTE

People around us must not feel embarrassed by our behaviour (Colossians 4:6).
We must avoid immoral conduct (Titus 3:1–2).
Without etiquette, members of society would show too much impatience.
Etiquette makes us cultured people who leave our marks wherever we go (Titus 3:8).
It teaches us mannerisms, the way we eat, talk, walk, and most importantly behave in society (Proverbs 23:1–2).
It helps us to relate with people (Philippians 4:5).
The way we interact with our superiors, parents, fellow workers, friends, etc. matters.
Etiquette enables individuals to earn respect and appreciation in society (Proverbs 18:24).
It teaches us to value relationships (Proverbs 25:17; Luke 6:31).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Discuss what it means to do things decently and properly.

2. SOCIAL ETIQUETTE

When invited to a social gathering, do not be in a haste to take the front seat (Luke 14:7–11; Proverbs 25:6–7).
Do not call someone more than twice continuously. If they do not pick up your call, presume they have something important to attend to.
Return money or anything that you have borrowed even before the other person remembers to ask for it.
Always be modest. Be careful not to expose your integrity and character (Psalm 37:21).
Never order the expensive dish on the menu when someone is treating you.
If you take a taxi, try to sit at the rear and make plans to pay the next time (Proverbs 18:24).
Never interrupt when someone is talking. Always be polite.
When someone shows you a photo on their phone, do not swipe left or right.
If a colleague tells you they have a doctor’s appointment, do not ask what for. If they want to share, they will tell you.
Do not put people in uncomfortable situations by forcing them to say what they do not want to say.
Do not be a busybody in other people’s matters (1 Timothy 5:13; 1 Peter 4:15).

In addition, you should not rush for food or chairs in a large gathering. Do not jump queues. You should be careful to maintain cleanliness and avoid waste. Do not use reckless slang. Flagrant abuse of decorum, lack of table manners and improper dressing should be avoided.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: What other etiquette are you willing to share with the class?

CONCLUSION: We must consciously guard our utterances and conduct as good representatives of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20).

CLOSING PRAYER: Father, I receive the grace to be exemplary in my conduct.

ASSIGNMENT: State five (5) consequences of a lack of social etiquette. (2×5 = 10 Marks)
