INTRODUCTION: Freedom is a beautiful experience that allows individuals to think and act according to their will. It is the condition of being free from external restraints. It includes freedom of choice, expression, and association, which are integral to human life. However, freedom without borders is problematic. True freedom should not be accompanied by evil or harmful actions such as wickedness, corruption, and sin.

1. DESCRIPTION AND BRANDS
Untoward freedom refers to liberty without boundaries. It is freedom without limits which degenerates into sinful behaviour and problems. Paul warns against this kind of unrestrained independence in Galatians 5:1, emphasising that freedom must be used correctly and within the framework of moral and ethical limits to avoid falling into sin and destruction.
Untoward freedom manifests in several destructive ways, each representing a deviation from the true purpose of liberty. These include:
- Lawlessness: This freedom opposes God’s will, leading to disorder and chaos (1 Peter 2:16a). It disregards moral and legal boundaries, promoting anarchy.
- Flout: This occurs when individuals ignore or deliberately disobey rules, laws, and authority figures such as parents, guardians, and government (Proverbs 30:17; 2 Chronicles 26:16-20).
- Rebellion: Exercising freedom by opposing legitimate authority in the name of freewill, leading to trouble and division (Isaiah 30:1; 1 Samuel 15:23). It fosters autonomy that is contrary to God’s order.
- Obeying the Flesh: Submitting to carnal desires under the guise of freedom leads to sinful behaviours. This is a perversion of liberty, allowing the flesh to dominate rather than submit to the Spirit (Romans 8:4-6; 12-13).
- Evil Practices: Engaging in unlawful or immoral activities under the pretence of freedom. These practices often emerge quietly and are justified as personal rights or liberties (Micah 2:1).
- Throwing Caution into the Wind: This is a reckless form of freedom where people disregard the consequences of their actions, living carelessly and engaging in worldly behaviours while claiming to be believers (Exodus 32:1-7; Revelation 2:15; 1 John 2:15-17). It leads to a false sense of liberty that results in spiritual bondage and disobedience to God’s law.
These forms of “untoward freedom” ultimately lead to negative outcomes, such as sin, lawlessness and a breakdown of moral and spiritual order. True freedom should be exercised within the boundaries of God’s will, leading to life, peace and righteousness.
2. TRUE FREEDOM
True and total freedom is found in Christ Jesus (John 8:36). When we accept Jesus as our personal Lord and Saviour and live to obey Him, we experience freedom within the boundaries of His word (Romans 8:2). This freedom includes:
- Freedom from Sin: Christ gives us victory over sin, enabling us to live righteously (Romans 6:14).
- Freedom from Oppression: Jesus delivers us from all forms of oppression, offering peace and restoration (Isaiah 54:14).
- Freedom from Sickness: Through Jesus, we are healed and made whole (Matthew 9:35).
- Freedom from Principalities and Powers: Christ has defeated all spiritual forces, granting us victory over them (Romans 8:37-39; Colossians 2:15).
- Freedom from Bondage: Jesus sets us free from all forms of spiritual and physical bondage (Galatians 5:1).
- Freedom from Curses: Christ redeemed us from curses and offered blessings instead (Galatians 3:13).
- Freedom from Fear: Through the Holy Spirit, we receive power, love, and a sound mind, overcoming fear (2 Timothy 1:7).
- Freedom from Everlasting Punishment: Through faith in Christ, we are given eternal life, free from condemnation and eternal separation from God (John 3:15-18).
While freedom in Christ is a beautiful and liberating gift, it is not a license to sin.
CONCLUSION: True freedom should be lived in obedience to God’s word, reflecting His righteousness and holiness. This freedom empowers us to live a life that honours God, avoiding sin and walking in the fullness of His grace.
