DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY

In 1972, singer and activist Joan Baez was in Hanoi, Vietnam, during a 12-day American bombing campaign.

While hiding in the basement of her hotel, she feared for her life and observed that in moments of extreme danger, even atheists and agnostics found themselves praying. However, once the crisis ended, many people quickly returned to their former beliefs and routines.

This experience highlighted a common human tendency—turning to God in desperation but neglecting Him once relief comes.

Hannah’s experience in today’s passage presents a different response. She was no stranger to adversity and emotional pain.

Earlier, she had prayed silently in God’s house, pouring out her heart in deep anguish. Her prayer was specific and sacrificial: if God granted her a son, she vowed to dedicate him to the Lord all the days of his life (1 Samuel 1:11). God answered her prayer and gave her Samuel.

Hannah’s second prayer, recorded in 1 Samuel 2, is a beautiful song of praise. It is not a request but a celebration of God’s power, faithfulness, and salvation.

She rejoiced not only because she received a child but also because she was privileged to return Samuel to God for His service. Her praise flowed from a heart deeply aware of God’s mercy and sovereignty.

As this year draws to a close, we are reminded to reflect on God’s faithfulness in our lives. Many of us have cried out to God during moments of fear, loss, and uncertainty—and He has proven Himself as our refuge and deliverer.

Sadly, once the storms pass, gratitude often fades. Like Hannah, we must intentionally offer sincere praise and thanksgiving to God, acknowledging His goodness, provision, and unfailing love as we step into a new year.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

There’s something wrong when our prayers are louder than our praises to God.

THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:

Revelation 21–22
