DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
Drivers sometimes encounter a “NO TURN ON RED” traffic sign at intersections. This regulatory sign warns drivers not to turn left or right while the red light is on. They must wait for the green light before making a turn, no matter how free the road may seem.
Today’s passage deals with the exercise of Christian liberty and the right attitude toward morally neutral issues—matters on which sincere believers may hold different views.
It warns believers to use their liberty with caution. In simple terms, if your action will cause another believer to stumble, don’t turn on red!
A major issue addressed here is the Jewish dietary laws and the observance of special days. Some Christians believe they are free to eat any wholesome food because Christ’s finished work of redemption has delivered believers from ceremonial laws concerning clean and unclean foods.
Others, especially those from Jewish backgrounds, still feel morally obligated to observe these laws. When such believers see others eating foods they consider unclean, they may feel offended or pressured to violate their conscience.
Apostle Paul teaches that believers should not judge or despise one another over matters that are not sinful. Rather, all actions should be guided by love and consideration. Christians must avoid behaving in ways that may cause others to stumble or sin against their conscience.
We must remember that our choices affect others. Our dressing, speech, attitudes, and lifestyle can either encourage or discourage fellow believers. Therefore, love should always take priority over personal liberty.
There is no spiritual gain in being judgmental over non-essential matters of faith. Those who are strong in faith should enjoy God’s provisions with gratitude, but always with sensitivity to others.
Be willing to accommodate harmless differences among believers and place their spiritual well-being above your personal comfort or pleasure.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Be considerate in your speech and actions!
