DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
There once lived a man who protested whenever he was told, “God be with you.” He argued that God’s presence would make life miserable, claiming that one would constantly struggle to meet His demands and lose personal freedom.
As absurd as this reasoning sounds, it reflects the mindset of many people today and exposes a shallow understanding of who God truly is. A proper relationship with God leaves no room for casual irreverence or slavish fear.
When the psalmist declared that “God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints,” he was referring to reverential fear—a deep sense of awe, respect, and honour for God. This fear flows naturally from recognising His holiness, majesty, faithfulness, and overwhelming power, all of which are vividly portrayed in today’s Bible reading.
God is incomparable in heaven and on earth. He rules the raging seas and stills their waves. Like a mighty warrior, He crushed the enemies of His people, as seen in His judgment over ancient Egypt.
The heavens and the earth belong to Him. He is not only the Creator but also the Sustainer of all things. His throne is established in righteousness and justice, while mercy and truth go before Him as heralds.
Such a revelation of God’s omnipotence should naturally provoke heartfelt worship from both angels and humans. Just as angels honour God and swiftly obey His commands, believers on earth are called to reverence and obey Him in all things. True worship must reflect both the greatness of God’s majesty and the depth of His love and grace.
Sadly, the casual, presumptuous attitudes that often characterise modern Christian worship are foreign to genuine reverence for God. A true understanding of His greatness, glory, goodness, and grace should humble us, leading us to honour and obey Him wholeheartedly with reverential fear.
