DAILY MANNA FOR TODAY
After Charles H. Spurgeon finished preaching a sermon on justification by grace, a man approached him and said, “Oh sir, I have been praying, and I do not think God will forgive me unless I do something to deserve it.” Spurgeon replied, “I tell you, sir, if you bring any of your deservings, you shall never have it.
God gives away His justification freely; and if you bring anything to pay for it, He will throw it back in your face and will not give His justification to you.”
This story clearly explains why many struggle with salvation. While damnation seems costly, salvation is entirely free. The problem lies in the mistaken mindset of many who believe they must first improve themselves before coming to God.
Scripture teaches otherwise. The passage under review makes it clear that faith in the vicarious sacrifice of Christ is the only remedy for humanity’s fallen state. His shed blood is sufficient—fully covering all sins and delivering from eternal judgment for everyone who comes in humility, renouncing self-righteousness and trusting in Him alone.
On the day of Pentecost, after Peter’s unrehearsed sermon, the crowd was convicted and cried out, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” Similarly, the Philippian jailer, overwhelmed by God’s power, asked Paul and Silas, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” The answer remains unchanged: salvation is by grace through faith, not by works, so that no one may boast.
Religious pride, like that of the Pharisees, often leads people to measure holiness by outward morality, despising others while living inwardly defeated by guilt and condemnation. Sin keeps humanity in bondage, and only genuine repentance and faith in Christ can bring true freedom.
Salvation cannot be purchased. It must be received. Stretch out the hand of faith and accept God’s gift—full and free.
