MFM DAILY DEVOTIONAL 19TH FEBRUARY 2024
Genesis 4:9 says, “And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper.” The Almighty God asked Cain a question, which ordinarily should not cause any stir. But because he was guilty, the question rattled him and his answer aptly describes our topic for today – selfishness. The selfishness of Cain led him to murder his brother. God asked him, Where is your brother? And he answered, “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
A major essence of family life is care for one another. The answer of Cain showed the height of his irresponsibility towards his brother. Hence, it was easy for him to kill Abel. Unfortunately, this is the attitude of many towards their relatives. They don’t care what happens to their siblings, parents, cousins, nephews or nieces etc. They cannot be bothered how others are faring as long as they are doing well. God is not happy with this kind of attitude of selfishness. 1 John 3:15-18 puts it more succinctly: “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.”
When I considered the words of a certain writer which goes thus: “Selfishness turns away its face from the sorrows, shames, and failures of others. But love dares to look at the head bowed with grief and the face paled with suffering,” I came to the conclusion that indeed selfishness should have no place amongst Christian families and homes.
Galatians 6: 2 enjoins us to bear one another’s burden; and so fulfil the law of Christ. Also, God’s counsel in Philippians 2:3-4 is instructive and we should all heed it so as to make love, unity, peace and progress to reign in our families, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.”
